Facebook has mixed uses from friends and family to business networking. It’s also a great tool for marketing and gaining referrals. We pass around the word about services, websites and products we like. We share ideas, trials and triumphs… and we talk about our lives.
Art is a rare product type because it is extremely personal. Each viewer sees and appreciates art differently, so for every one piece of art there are potentially hundreds of perspectives and visions associated with it. For this reason, Facebook can be an amazing tool for spreading the word about your art.
You don’t have to get into a hard sell sales mindset to share your art through Facebook. However, you do need to remember that no one knows what you do or what you have to offer if you don’t tell them.
Here are some ideas of ways to share with the world via Facebook the art you have created:
- Show samples of your work – create a special photo album to upload your photos to. You can then always share a link to various images via your wall posts to remind people of art pieces you’ve added in the past.
- Feature images or projects you are currently working on – you don’t have to give away the entire concept, but you can show close-ups or detailed areas of an art piece to show your style, technique and passion for the work you create.
- Post about events you will be attending – invite your Facebook friends and fans to join you at your special appearances if possible.
Things to remember when sharing your art online, or in public anywhere:
- Always sign your work
- Watermark your images to post online if possible to help protect your work from being used by others
- Always display low resolution (small sized) files, never display a large printable version
- If you work in a medium other than digital or scanned art, take pictures and share the photos
Don’t expect to be discovered… instead toot your own horn and let people know what you’ve created. Even family and friends don’t know what you’re doing all the time. Sure, they know you’re an artist, but do they really know what you’re up to? Share your creative greatness with others and become the conversation starter about the art you make. Continue to share your work and your talents – you never know where your next biggest fan will come from.
